World Cup champions Italy Italy

While most people still watch soccer on television, in their living room or in a pub, the 2006 tournament was the first World Cup in which some realistic alternatives emerged. In several countries, live video was available on the Internet.

Elsewhere, games or highlights could be watched on mobile phones.

World Cup 2006 Facts & Figures - The World Cup was concluded in Berlin on Sunday and the Italians were crowned World Champions for the fourth time in history. Italy beat France 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out to win the World Cup after an absorbing 1-1 draw in Berlin. They have now won the competition four times, one fewer than Brazil, and it was the first time they managed to win a World Cup match on penalties after three failed attempts.

Fabio Grosso scored the winning penalty after France's David Trezeguet missed.
